Engraving of Maroon Settlement, from Kaz Antiye

~JACK BERTHELOT & MARTINE GAUME~

"Kay Antiye" (Carribbean Popular Dwelling) written in 1982 by Jack Berthelot and Martine Gaume is the definitive introduction to Caribbean domestic vernacular architecture.  It is features three translations in French, English and Kreyol.  The authors, two architects based in Guadaloupe, address important dimensions of West Indian architectural ethnography, including the setting of the rural house, particularly its relation to the garden and landscape.

They also stress the importance of the traditional rural house in the marriage and family structures, its construction by a cooperative work group (konbit in Haitian Kreyol) the potential mobility of the buildings, and ritual practices surrounding their construction.  Town architecture and the relation of the popular dwelling to the larger "Plantation house" are also addressed.  This wonderful and rare book much deserves to be republished.
