~ENHANCED CONFINED MASONRY CONSTRUCTION~

This townhouse prototype builds on the "Creole Townhouse" and "Kay Chamhot" (house with tall rooms).  A double height ground floor opens to the downtown market streets, and provides flexible potential for retail and office use.  The buildings utilize an enhanced form of the conventional confined masonry construction methods that have widespread application throughout Haiti, with additional steel frame reinforcing.

The rooms provide natural cross-ventilation and daylight through full height louvered and shuttered openings.  These building configurations balance culturally familiar forms  with adaptability to various uses and occupancies.  They complement progressive planning efforts in Haiti, including the proposals put forth by Coalition of Caribbean Urbanists, the University of Miami and the Princes Foundation.
