Gulf Coast Smart Dwelling I, published in the Wall Street Journal, April 2011

~STEVE MOUZON~

Steve Mouzon hasn't spent any time in Haiti (yet!) but based on this work in New Orleans and on Mississippi Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, he has some important ideas that could help in the reconstruction efforts.    In "Living Tradition--Architecture of the Bahamas" Mouzon argues that a pragmatic, reality based approach--"why we do this..." provides an important precedent for urban environmentally and culturally connected coding and design regulations.

Mouzon builds on the threads first set out by Christopher Alexander and his colleagues in "A Pattern Language", including defining various levels of patterns, what he terms universal, national, regional and local. The Katrina Cottage projects also provide critical lessons for our work in Haiti, and in  "Traditional Construction Patterns" he promotes the link of architecture back to building construction.
