~ANGHELEN ARRINGTON PHILIPS~

In 1975 Anghelen Arrington Philipps published "Gingerbread Houses--Haiti's Endangered Species" with the Port au Prince publisher Imprimerie Henri Deschamps.  The book contains 45 illustrations, done in pen and ink, ad well as historical notes, of the "Gingerbread" houses, those striking early 20th century masterpieces of Haitian and African American architecture.  Arrington Philipps worked exclusively from life, spending hours in front of each house, rendering them in loving detail.

It is impossible to underestimate the importance of this work.  In many cases, Arrington Philipps' drawings are the only record we have of these buildings while they were still intact, as many have fallen into dereliction, or worse yet been demolished.  Also the drawings show the lush tropical landscape context, and in their clarity and precision might yet help to provide  a guide as well as further inspiration for the rediscovery and restoration of these magnificent world treasures.
