4.  WORKSHOP ON PAUp RECONSTRUCTION-COCU

The Workshop on the the Reconstruction of Port au Prince was facilitated by the Coalition of Caribbean Urbanists (COCU) in July of 2010.

From the COCU workshop website--"Following the devastating earthquake that leveled much of Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital city, a group of Caribbean urbanists organized a workshop to strategize for the future reconstruction of the city with their Haitian counterparts. Professionals from Jamaica, Trinidad, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico met in San Juan, Puerto Rico from July7-10, 2010 with Haitian architects, planners and engineers, including Leslie Voltaire, an urban planner and Haitian delegate to the United Nations. The intention of the event was to generate analysis, scenarios and options for reconstruction, based on a vision of Port-au-Prince’s future as a functioning metropolitan area. The city of 3,000,000 people bore the brunt of the tremors and was left crippled without an operable government and almost no infrastructure. The immediate needs of the population are water, food, and shelter, all of which are being supplied by international organizations. Beyond these pressing needs, however, is the ultimate question of how to create a revitalized sustainable city from the ruins. Seizing the opportunity to rebuild the city, overcrowded and lacking in amenities prior to the earth quake, the goal of the workshop was to come up with viable solutions for the short and long term."
