~HAITIAN KREYOL BUILDING LEXICON~

The range of traditional Haitian building types employed in rural and urban settlement structures is relatively straightforward.  They include the Ti-Kay, the Kay Kreyol, the Kay Chamhot, the Kreyol Townhouse and the Gwo Kay/Grand Maison.  These building types span a transect from rural to urban.  Traditional Haitian buildings have rooms arranged enfilade, with no hallways, and single gable or hip roof forms.

Other characteristic elements include the Garli and tall louvered and shuttered openings.  The confluence between these Kreyol building types and types found in the American South, particularly in New Orleans and the Gulf region is of course no coincidence--Kreyol culture pervaded this region, spread by water borne migration and trade.
